Window Cleaner Entrepreneurship: Do It For You, Do It For Your Family

Starting your own business can really change your life. When I think about the good, the bad, and the ugly, at the end of the day, paving my own way was the right move for me and my family. After spending more than a decade in the corporate sector, I felt that I was working harder than I would ever be rewarded. My time was not my own, and my family was growing. For me, it was time to make a move.

One of my favorite perks is the flexible hours. As someone who runs a window cleaning business, I’ve seen how this flexibility is a game-changer. When my wife had our last two kids, being my own boss meant I could tweak my schedule to spend more time with them during those important early weeks without worrying about losing money or job security. It also means we can pick up and travel whenever we want. We’re not tied to time off requests, capped vacation or sick days, or expectations to keep working while on vacation. When I’m off, I can unplug and enjoy family time.

Plus, being an entrepreneur means there’s absolutely no ceiling on how much you can earn. Unlike those regular 9-to-5 jobs where your paycheck is pretty much set in stone and getting a promotion feels like waiting for a bus that never comes, running your own business opens up a world of possibilities. Your income grows with the effort and creativity you put into it!

It’s like having the ultimate power-up – the more you hustle, innovate, and think outside the box, the more rewards come your way. After three years of diving headfirst into this business adventure, I’ve seen firsthand how hard work really pays off and turns into tangible financial success. It’s not just about making money; it’s about watching your dreams take shape and seeing them translate into real-life achievements!

I get to build relationships with our customers, which keeps them returning every season while also gaining new business. I was amazed at how fast we grew. Having good relationships with your customers helps you compound your success. When you own and run your own business, you get all of the rewards of your hard work and success- you don’t have to share it with corporate. As a self-motivated person, I found the corporate constraints of their reward systems demotivating. There wasn’t much to inspire and challenge folks to work smarter or harder. Now that my income is up to me, as a business owner, my motivation is knowing that I can build generational wealth for my family- if I’m motivated to do so.

But let’s be real—entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone. It takes guts, resilience, and a go-getter attitude to tackle challenges like market changes or competition head-on. You have to be smart and tuned into the economy. You need to be able to look ahead and save for the hard times, and maximize your efforts during the good. There are some months where, as an entrepreneur, you won’t be able to pay yourself at all. I had to get used to not having a steady income, but now that we’re three years into it, the work has steadied out, and I know when the slow seasons are. We’re hiring people and even though that means additional overhead, it’s growing the business beyond what I could do on my own.

These bumps in the road help you grow stronger personally, too. Sometimes, as an entrepreneur, you start by yourself. You don’t have the team or help that you’re used to, and at the end of the day, the ultimate accountability is always on you. Being an entrepreneur in a physical industry like home services also has other risks. It’s hard on your body to do physical labor all day, and it can be risky if you get injured. When you’re injured on the job, you don’t have anyone’s support but your own for medical coverage. You might also not have a backup to help cover the workload while out. The key to success as an entrepreneur in the window cleaning business is to be resilient, adaptable, and ready to do the hard things.

For those prepared to dive in while keeping family first, entrepreneurship can be super rewarding professionally and personally! Just be sure to stay realistic and plan. How many years do you want to be in the field? How many jobs do you need to complete to pay the bills? How many do you need to do to be comfortable? When’s the right time to hire? There are a lot of unknowns.
